This is not your daddy’s punk band. The four fellas from Aces Over Kings are home-grown, garage-rocking, leg-thumping northwest punk-tasticness. They have all worked hard to get where they are today and there is nothing but more rocking out in their future. Be prepared, there is an AOK lunchbox in your future.
How is your band different from others out now? We have a distinct sound: poppy but not bubblegum, rock but not butt, punk with a melody, emo but no screams or tears, and indie without the sideburns and beards. Lyrically we tackle issues that are deeper and more introspective than a lot of stuff out there. There\'s nothing wrong with having fun, but most of our songs are pretty personal and meaningful to us; they have a message without being preachy.
When you started the band, did you imagine you\'d still be together after almost 10 years? I don\'t think so; it’s pretty cool. Progressing from just two guys messing around in a parents’ garage to playing on the stages where our favorite bands play has been awesome.
What do you enjoy more: playing live or recording in the studio? Playing live is more exciting because of the adrenaline and energy that comes with it and interacting with the crowd is always fun. On the other hand, recording is great too because it allows us to be more creative and more intimate with our music. We just recently finished recording some new tracks at Robert Lang Studios in June \'05 and are very excited about how they turned out.
Where does the inspiration come from for the band\'s songs? [Our songs are] pretty much personal experiences and real life events that are happening to us. On our most recent recording, we have songs that are more serious like the passing of a relative, the journey of finding faith, and the struggles of daily life.
Who would you say is your biggest influence as a band and why? Musically, it would probably be the punk bands we grew up listening to in the \'90s; Face to Face, Goldfinger, MxPx, Screaching Weasel, Zoinks, etc.
Will we get to see Aces Over Kings lunchboxes and bed sheets anytime soon? We hope so; world domination is in our plans.
