Inka
By Aparna Datta
“Even through the stereo speakers, Inka has a presence that shakes the atmosphere”, wrote Jennifer Layton of Name Brand Goddess. Inka’s debut CD, Name Brand Goddess, is fresh and inventive, crossing the genre borders of music fearlessly. Her CD includes elements of rock, pop, Americana – truly modern and inclusive music.

Comparing Inka to other artists would be a hard task for any music journalist. Her unique sound creates something that has never been heard before, yet it is strangely familiar.

“I grew up watching Hee Haw on TV and listening to ABBA on the radio. I really love all music from classical to hip hop. I feel like the ‘multi-genre’ genre is becoming more mainstream in popular music,” states Inka.

Inka grew up in the high desert of southeastern Oregon and her sense of artistry was informed at an early age by the rugged beauty of that land. She is the oldest of 7 children and her twin sister, Danielle, is a talented fashion designer and seamstress. At 6 Inka and Danielle were both already interested in fashion making up the “Which one do you like?” game with fashion magazines and catalogs. Inka started performing at 13 and her first love, acting, took her to the prestigious Goodman School of Drama in Chicago. She studied theatre for two years. Chicago’s rich music scene opened other doors as well.

“The blues and jazz scene inspired awe in me. I went to blues clubs every chance I got. One day, songs just started flowing out of me. It was like one day the music switch turned on. I’ve always been a kind of naive artist, inspired by life and nature- but about 5 years ago I realized that the business side of music factors into success so I moved from rural Oregon to San Francisco intending to get a foothold in the industry. I’m still a stronger artist than a business person but I’m bringing them into better balance.” Inka’s growing business sense is helping her career thrive, having performed at many venues and festivals across the country. She now intends to perform globally.

“I’ve always been performing. It’s a natural world for me and I love it. When I perform I’m sincere about the emotions I express. All the grief, pain as well as joy and bliss. I care about the audiences I entertain. My heart goes out to all of us in this human condition. I’m trying to reveal myself- to become a clear mirror. I hope people leave my shows with some valuable new insight… and feel sexier, of course. ”

Not only does she balance her amazing musical career but Inka also balances a family with her gigs and traveling, raising two sons, Essia, 10 and Mehra, 6. The role they play in Inka’s life is pivotal. “I feel like connecting with Essia and Mehra is where I really ROCK in life. I’m crazy busy but I’m so lucky to have family that supports my gift so I can also rock the clubs. I have the best of both worlds.” She is definitely a great example of a woman who can do it all.
