So, tell me about the name of your band, “This Providence.” Where does the name come from?
Dan: We used to be called Sunday’s Best. A lot of our fans sent us ideas for band names, one person sent one with the name, providence, and I looked up that word and really liked it. It means divine guidance and we just really liked that word.
How did you guys all meet?
Phil: A couple of us met at church. Our original drummer, Dan, and myself played in a different band. Then we ended up picking up Gavin, another member and our drummer quit so now he have Ryan.
Who would you say in your biggest influence?
Dan: It’s hard to say just one.
Phil: There are so many. We listen to so much.
Dan: I think it’s different for all of us. For me it would probably be Jimmy Eat World, Gatsby American Dream, and the Beatles.
Phil: Yeah, that’s probably what I’d say.
Some of the titles of your songs are poetic. How do you come up with the names of your songs?
Dan: Sometimes we will just start with an idea and that might be the title of the song. Like the “Road to Jerihco.” I had the name first so the song was written around that.
So I hear that you guys are obsessed with “Guitar Hero.”
Dan: The guitar looks like something from Fisher Price.
Phil: It’s like Dance Revolution but on a guitar.
What exactly happened with the drumstick-in-the-nose incident during one of your shows?
Phil: I still don’t even know. I know that during the first song he (¬¬¬Ryan) was drumming and I think when he came up, the tip of stick-the wood, got jammed up his nose. I didn’t know he hurt it until I saw him go running off the stage with blood everywhere.
Dan: Drummers always hit themselves with sticks. He just managed to get it up his nose. A little piece of the drumstick got up there. At the end of the show he had to pull it out. Ryan has had problems with his nose…I think he said he has broken it four or five times (laughs)
When you guys become huge rock stars what is the first thing you are going to buy?
Phil: A laptop. A Mac book.
Dan: I’d buy an engagement ring for my girlfriend.
Phil: How much money? (laughs) I’d buy a house.
Dan: That’s what I’d want to buy mostly, is an engagement ring.
